While she's recovered from most of them, her optic nerve was damaged and her vision in her right (dominant) eye is still an issue. She's not told anyone the details for various reasons (some better than others) but her best friend, widower Andy Hale, doesn't waste time getting her to fess up. To complicate matters, she's been asked by her mother to photograph a risqué calendar featuring too many people she knows to fundraise for cancer research and she's not sure she can see well enough to do the project justice. This is quite a lovely story with some very emotional themes. It's not your typical friends-to-lovers romance either as there aren't any secret conflicts between the two and their deepening feelings are a surprise to both, handled maturely and with forthright. Their new relationship developed beautifully. However, Lucy's entire identity is tied up in her career; she doesn't know who she is without the ability to express herself through her photography. And, her relationship with her mother is fraught with tension as she struggles to assert her independence. Again, the mother-daughter issues are not your normal ones and you'll be drawn to both sides. Let's not forget Andy who loved his wife deeply and is still recovering, two years later, with her death from breast cancer. His relationship with their five-year old son will warm your heart as he tries to explain loss in ways he can digest and understand. And, Lucy and his wife were good friends so there's that to contend with as they both grieve and love each other differently. The issues and the developing relationship are told with eloquence and dignity, despite some moments of comic relief. The resolutions aren't easy and I loved how they weren't wrapped neatly in a bow. I can always count on Ava to inspire and this one definitely lifted my spirits. I hope this series never ends. (I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review)

This book was generously provided to me in exchange for an honest review by the author. We met Andy Hale in the previous books in this series. After he lost his wife, Kim, to breast cancer, he and his little boy came back to Dare Valley to live near the rest of his family. He needed to be near them while trying to be both mother and father to his son. He and his family have mourned the loss and he is just now edging his way back into life. But he hasn’t found anyone he is the least bit interested in dating. Lucy O’Brien and Andy have been best friends since kindergarten. In high school, each may have harbored a hint of romantic feelings towards the other but neither ever wanted to jeopardize their friendship. After high school, Lucy and Andy went their separate ways, Andy to medical school and Lucy to achieve her lifelong dream of becoming a photo journalist. Both succeeded in their dreams, Andy now practicing in Dare Valley and Lucy traveling all over the world taking photos of countries at war. After a debilitating accident, Lucy is forced to return home. Her friendship with Andy has remained strong throughout their lives through emails and skype. She loved the woman Andy had married and grieved with him at her loss. Andy is the only one she told the truth to about her injuries. Injuries that could forever change her career and livelihood as a photographer. Lucy’s mother has a history of crazy ideas. She and Andy’s mom have decided they want to create a Calendar of New Beginnings. Each month will feature a resident of Dare Valley, posing in the buff with a prop of some sort covering the important areas. Each subject will be honoring someone they have lost to cancer and all proceeds will be donated. They want Lucy to take the photos. The more time Lucy and Andy spend together, the more they start to feel something more than just friendship towards each other. The ease of a nearly thirty-five year friendship helps them to talk through these feelings and whether or not to act on them. What better way to start a romance than from a long standing friendship. But Andy’s life, his son and career, are here in Dare Valley. Lucy has not given up on the hope that she can return to her life as a traveling photojournalist. Can they ever find a way to love each other but not to give up their dreams? This is a wonderful friends to lovers story. We get plenty of updates on all of the other members of the Hale and O’Brien families from the previous books. We even get some from Margie and Evan from the Dare Valley Meets Paris series as Andy’s sister, Moira, is also in Dare Valley and is approached by Evan as a prospect to work for him. I love the way that Ava keeps us up to date on all of the lives of the characters we have grown to love. Lucy has plenty of obstacles to overcome after coming home. Her relationship with her mother, her relationship with Andy, and her own future. Andy can’t believe how lucky he is to be given the chance to find the love of a lifetime, not once, but twice. Can he and Lucy find a way to make it work? Will Lucy accept the gift of love Andy is offering her, of a Lifetime of New Beginnings?

I like the fact that the characters overlap in her series. It's like going home and catching up with old friends.

Another Great Story Ava Miles writes stories that you seem to fall into like you are right there with the characters. Lucy and Andy's story is no different. From best friends in kindergarten, through Andy's marriage to someone else and Lucy's traveling all over the world taking photos in hot spots, they have remained friends. Now Lucy has returned to Dare Valley and the only one she confides the true reason to is her best friend, Andy Hale. See how all of this goes along with their friendship.

Emotions aplenty This story will have you laughing so hard you’re crying, but be careful because the emotions between family might have you crying tears of sadness for them as well. It definitely is worth the time to read. Can’t wait to read the next story.

Unique view I enjoyed this approach to a story and life changing event. It made me think about the things in my own life that matter and why they do. How would I recover if I lost my most treasured skills? I recommend it.

Lucy was injured in attack on one of the villages. Her vision has been damaged. She needs to take a break and go home so that she can heal from the injuries. While healing, Lucy will teach at the Emmits Merriam School of Journalism in Dare Valley. Lucy and her mother have always had a different relationship. Her mother would like one thing, while Lucy would like another. Lucy would like to avoid this power struggle with her mother. Her mother, Ellen would like Lucy to shoot pictures for a calendar. It will be a calendar for those that have lost someone to cancer. Lucy has been fortunate to have her best friend, Andy Hale, Andy Cakes, since childhood. Andy lost his wife Kim to breast cancer and is raising their son Danny. Andy and Lucy have stayed friends, and only friends. She was grateful she never risked their important relationship. Lucy has decided to keep her injuries a secret. She does not want to tell Andy, but decides to anyway. She needs to have someone to talk to about her vision difficulties. Andy's mother April and Lucy's mother are both hoping that Andy and Lucy get together and create more grandchildren. April and Ellen have a new project for Lucy. They would like Lucy to take photos for a calendar that they have organized to raise money for breast cancer awareness. They would like for the calendar to have the people showing a little skin...not total nudes, but using props to cover the appropriate anatomy. The name of the Calendar is called The Calendar of New Beginnings. Andy and Lucy are having fun with their friendship. They have always been able to share everything with one another. Lucy knows that losing Kim was huge loss for Andy. Lucy is able to rent a cottage. Lucy begins teaching as well as working on the calendar. Lucy and Andy start seeing each other daily and talking. Lucy starts to recognize that there are times when she looks at Andy that it makes her all warm inside. What is this feeling? She sometimes had an attraction to Andy in high school, but never acted on it. She was planning on leaving Dare Valley, she needed to block out this weirdness, it would hurt them if they gave into the moments of attraction. Lucy and Ellen have a complete falling out over the pictures that Lucy has taken for the calendar. Ellen is mad that all of the pictures show sadness and she wanted happiness. Andy was upset and went to Lucy's mom house and showed her the picture that Lucy had taken of him when he thought about Kim. Lucy and Ellen apologize to each other and Lucy finally shares with her mother why she is home. This is a wonderful book with great love, forgiveness and family. My favorite passage from the book is "You've always helped me feel my heart too." he said quietly, "even when I didn't think I had one left." How many people in this world can say they're lucky enough to have remained friends with someone from kindergarten, much less a best friend? I'm thankful that I can say I still have a friend from kindergarten. We've lost contact a couple of times but we always find each other again. It's so wonderful! I really enjoyed Andy & Lucy's story about that scary transition between friendship and love. I thought Ms. Miles handled all the worries and fears that one faces in that situation quite well. It was shown and talked about, but it didn't over-power the scenes or the book. I also thought how the characters took into account the needs and feelings of Danny, Andy's son, was also very authentic. I found all the things that Lucy is going through with being a photographer but having her vision damaged to be very fascinating as well. I'm a photographer, albeit an amateur one, and learning about the way Lucy has honed her skills and how she's dealing with the adversity of having her vision damaged felt real, raw, and honest to me. My main job is in a library. I can only imagine how I'd feel if through some freak accident, I wasn't able to work in a library anymore. It's daunting to think about and that anguish shines through in Lucy without over-taking the story. I'm thrilled that Ms. Miles has started including a map of the town in her Dare Valley series as well. I love maps in general. The use of them for fictitious places helps me get into the story better as I'm able to visualize where people are moving to and from around the town. Yet, despite how well-written it is and how wonderful the story line is, there's something about the book that just feels "off" to me. I'm not even sure what it is. There is more family conflict in this one which may be setting off my inner anxiety about such things. Also, Moira, Andy's sister, who is also the main heroine in the next Dare Valley novel, was more active in this one, but she has a pretty substantial role in the story so it's not like she's showing up with no purpose. I don't know what it is that I'm feeling; it's just "off" somehow. That's why I only gave it 4 out of 5 stars. I certainly recommend this book to anyone interested in a good romance novel. It is well-written, it is highly enjoyable, and it's entirely probable that you won't feel like it's "off" at all. All in all it's another great addition to the Dare Valley series. What an emotional read! I love a good best friend romance, and these two best friends are pretty amazing. Not only have they been friends since kindergarten, but their friendship has survived Andy getting married/losing his wife as well as Lucy's dangerous travels around the world. There is no question that these two have a close bond, but it gets tested even further when they realize --for the first time since they were teens--that they have romantic feelings for each other. Andy played a pretty big role in Natalie's story, and my heart just broke for him while watching him try to deal with life after the death of his young wife. In this story, he is obviously still trying to navigate those murky waters, but he seemed a little bit brighter. He is such a great guy, and it is hard not to fall in love with him. Lucy is a little bit of an enigma, and she holds her feelings close to the vest. She doesn't want to tell her family the real reason why she came home, and she does her best to put on a brave face while struggling to continue doing something she loves. It was hard to watch Lucy's struggles with not being the same photographer she once was, combined with the clashes with her mother. She is obviously a strong character, but it felt like it took some time to really connect with her. Once Lucy and Andy got together, their relationship moved a bit quicker than I had anticipated. We saw so much of their friendship, but I wanted to see a bit more of their romance. However, Andy's gift at the end was perfect and did a great job of showing their overall journey. I also wanted to see a bit more of Andy's son--particularly his interaction with Lucy--but I am sure we will see more of this in future novels since old characters always pop up! I loved the whole concept of the calendar. There was a tension between the humorous and serious sides of the project, which really embodied the struggles of moving on after the loss of a loved one. I loved that Jill and Chef T participated! As always, Arthur's presence really made the book, and I loved his thoughts about the calendar in the epilogue. The budding friendship between Moira and Lucy was a highlight of the book, and I am so excited to watch the relationship blossom between her and Evan! I loved him in the mini-series and can't wait see more of him! **I received an eBook copy from the publisher for the purpose of an honest review. They remained in touch while Lucy traveled all over the world. She returned home after his wife, Kim passed away, but this time she was staying for longer to see if she could recover from her injuries. The only person she confided in was Andy. The more time they spent together, they both began having "other" feelings for one another. It was a slow progression but they began dating. That didn't come without struggles. Lucy was determined to go back to work traveling the world. However, she was unsure if that would happen. She agreed to do a "calendar of new beginnings" that her mom and Andy's mom wanted to do to benefit those who lost loved ones to cancer. Lucy had a hard time being able to focus well with the photos because of her eye. This led to a lot of tension between her and her mom. There were some very difficult times and heated arguments between Lucy and her mom. It was a very emotional time. Andy tried so hard to help Lucy to get through this and to convince her that they could be happy together, forever. Ultimately, Lucy confided in her "teacher" Arthur Hale. That was another emotional part of the book as it was a serious discussion of work and love and how to bring them both together. Finally, the ending was just beautiful, emotional and lovely. I can't even put into words the way Ava Miles made this fabulous ending. The thought that must have gone into that to get it perfect was just amazing. This book is such a beautiful story. One of my favorite romance novel tropes is a story of friends that become lovers, and this novel delivers one of the most unique takes on this. Most stories feature one person having an unrequited crush on another, however in this story, both realized that they had those thoughts every now and then but that they were always friends. Another reason this story is unique, it features a widowed hero and his son. While other stories have done this, too many will put down the deceased spouse or point out the faults in that relationship to show how strong the current relationship is. That is not the case in this story. This story shows how it’s possible to love more than one person and how it’s possible to treasure a previous love, while pursuing another. I absolutely loved this book. It has heart and passion in spades. Word of warning though, have a tissue box handy. There were several scenes where I found myself teary eyed, but those are the best stories because they make you feel something. Ava Miles always makes you feel something when you read her books and the journey that she takes the reader on is very special. This is a one of a kind book, in the sense, that I feel very fortunate to have read it and learned something from it. This one had a tremendous effect on me and I know that it will have an effect on you as well. Don’t pass this one up. It's truly a treasure. It is one of my favorites – and what a beautiful story it is! The secondary characters are friends from previous books, and I loved catching up with them. They are well developed and such personalities! You feel like you know them and you WANT to hang out in Dare Valley. I love that about the way Ava Miles weaves her stories. This one grabs you in the first chapter and doesn’t let you go until the end – and believe me, you won’t want to! The road to recovery is a rocky one, and whether it is from physical injuries, or those caused from circumstances beyond our control, the healing process is always made easier with the help of friends. Lucy and Andy both have demons to fight, and they find that they are stronger together. Their story is handled with humor and deep understanding. Set aside some time as you take this journey with Lucy, Andy and the rest of the Dare Valley family. It is difficult to put down. They have been best friends since little kids and have sort of have feelings for each other but never acted on them. Their mothers keep hoping they become more than friends and help try to push them together. Lucy and Andy are both dealing with their own issues and challenges, Lucy recovering from injuries as a photojournalist who covers war stories overseas may not be able to go back and take the award winning pictures she is known for; and Andy the loss of his wife to cancer and raising their son while doubting his abilities as a doctor. Will these two be able to make things work in their work lives and together? While facing those challenges their mothers who are also best friends come up with a crazy idea to make a “Calendar of New Beginnings”- a calendar of men and women mostly nude to donate money to breast cancer. Ava Miles always makes you feel as if you are with and/or are one of the characters. You know in your heart how the book ends, but it is always the twists and turns as you go that make the story so worth reading. I have loved all these stories and have yet to be disappointed. It is so easy to connect with the characters and everything is real life related and seems to just hit home. I received an eBook copy from the publisher for the purpose of an honest review. Andy and Lucy have been best friends since they were children. That’s not to say that they never felt more than just friendship, they just never revealed that to anyone, not even each other. Their careers forced them apart physically, but they never lost that friendship, even when Andy fell in love, got married and had a son. Unfortunately, Andy lost Kim to cancer a few short years later. He’s had to struggle to try to move on from her, but is in a much better place. Unfortunately, Andy lost Kim to cancer a few short years later. He’s had to struggle to try to move on from her, but is in a much better place. Lucy spends most of her time traveling from one country to another as a photojournalist. Taking pictures that tell a story is who she is, not just a job. When an after an attack injures her eyes that affects the way she sees and can take photographs, she returns home to heal and and to try to figure out where she goes from there. Andy and Lucy’s friendship picks up as if they hadn’t been apart so long, but neither of them expected that seeing each other again would bring back those feelings from long ago. They both struggle with the attraction, but the love behind it makes it easier for them to give in. Lucy is afraid that Andy won’t be able to handle it if and when she decides to go back out into the field, and struggles with making long term plans, while Andy can already see the rest of their lives together. He just has to make her believe in them and he does a beautiful job of showing her. Another great book in the Dare Valley series, Andy and Lucy’s story is an emotional, romantic and heartwarming read. I received an ARC for the purpose of an honest review. Their deep understanding of each other will test and ultimately strengthen their love. While Andy and Lucy explore their relationship, other bonds broken by cancer are realized and celebrated by the production of the Calendar of New Beginnings. The making of the calendar precipitates a furious disagreement between Lucy and her mother which resolves eventually. The theme of learning to live through the loss of a loved one abounds. This book is packed with new beginnings. A calendar could be made without the connection of death. The description of Andy's and Lucy's physical love was absolutely beautiful (I was jealous!). Danny's revelation to his father about his mother's visits made me teary. And Moira's new path leaves me eager to read her story. Ava Miles continues to impress. Each book introduces us to more well-rounded characters in complex associations demonstrating her expanding comprehension of what it means to be human. Once she confides in him about the injury to her eye and how this could end her love of photography he is there by her side to help her. They both realise they have feelings for the each other but think it is one sided for each of them. Lucy’s mother wants her to take the pictures for the calendar of new beginnings to help with the research of breast cancer. Can she do it with her eyes the way they are and can she and Andy break through the friendship barrier, this is such a wonderfully emotional book and I could say lots more about it but it would give away the story and I don’t want to spoil it for anyone. Once again Ava takes us on a magical journey and welcomes us back into the Dare Valley family.

At first reluctant to do so as he has his own demons, she is persuaded to take him into her confidence and lets him take care of her- to a point. Both are being pushed to date - each other but neither wants to spoil their friendship despite their growing attraction to each other - and there is also Andy’s son to consider. Both he and Andy still love Kim, Andy’s late wife. When life, in the form of her domineering mother and her off the wall idea forces her into action she begins to come out of her shell and Andy is there to help. There are some hilarious moments in this section of the book. This is Ms Miles’s best book to date. With her usual mix of wit and wisdom, she writes well rounded characters and the issues she deals with in the book give the reader pause for thought. It’s a good romance on a straightforward level but is also much more than that. I received an ebook copy from the publisher for the purpose of an honest review. I was not compensated for this review. I love this series by Ava Miles!! The Calendar of New Beginnings is the ninth book in the series and is Lucy and Andy's story. She wanted to take pictures and travel the world and for years that is what she has done, but she recently suffered physical trauma and an injury that could jeopardize her career and everything that for years she thought was important. Coming home to rest, teach at the local college and work on a special photo assignment that the local residents are doing for charity she hopes will get her mind off her injury and give her the rest that she needs to heal, but the special assignment has some people worked up and Lucy finds it more stressful than it needs to be. Andy is loving having Lucy home where she is safe from harm and hopefully will heal from the trauma that she recently has suffered, but having her close also brings back old feelings and even though he is okay with that he also feels sadness because it means he is moving forward in his life that no longer includes his deceased wife. I love their story and their journey to finding each other. It is a really sweet, poignant and heartwarming story. My favorite lines in the story: "You help me get in touch with my heart. You always have. And today... today you put me into a deeper connection with my heart than I've ever experienced." "You've always helped me feel my heart too, even when I didn't think I had one left." These two sentences are just so touching that I couldn't help tearing when I read this. The secondary characters in the stories are really wonderful too. Love Lucy's dad and Grandpa Hale. How nice to have people like them in your life. Really just can't get enough of Dare Valley and the people in them. Looking forward to more great books by Ava Miles. ** I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review

Lucy's and Andy's mothers come up with an idea to make a calendar to raise money for cancer research, and hire Lucy to take the photos. Between her class at the local college, dealing with her mother, and working on the calendar, Lucy and Andy both find that the spark they each had for the other in high school has never really gone out. The book shows a different side of the cancer battle: the side of those who lost someone due to cancer. So many stories focus on the cancer patient themselves but ignore what happens to those left behind. As someone who has lost family members due to this horrible disease, the message of this book really struck a cord with me. I cannot wait to see what Ms. Miles comes up with next! I can't imagine how hard it would be to lose someone like they did. But how Andy handles it is so inspirational because he allows himself to grieve and find the courage to find love again. Plus Danny is so adorable!!! Lucy has the dream job as a photojournalist and gets to travel the world, for which I am envious. But what I love about her is that she's upfront and independent. I love that she and Andy have been best friends their whole life. It makes the story so much more sweet and romantic. Once you start Ava's books, you're hooked !!!!

Lucy uses her photos to show the emotions that some of the supporting characters have. In doing so it causes a huge rift in her already shakey relationship with her mother. In the end those same photos help to mend the relationship and bring them to a better understanding than they have ever had. More than anything else this is a story about love and acceptance.
